Sertoma Stands for: SERvice TO MAnkind
Sertoma is the third oldest service club in the United States and is over ninety years old. It was first called the "Stand Together Club". The first luncheon meeting was held on April 12, 1912. The name was later changed to the "Co-Operative Club" and remained so until the early 40's. At that time the club was being confused with the many different cooperatives being formed during the war years, and a contest was held to change the name.
The winner of the contest was Noble W. Hiatt, who was the President of the North Indianapolis Sertoma Club, thus the name Sertoma was born. There are Sertoma Clubs throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. The focus of Sertoma International is on communicative disorders and our national heritage. However, in Sertoma, each club makes it's own decision on what sponsorships it chooses to support based on needs in it's own community.
Club Mission
The Sertoma Foundation, an International charity, believes that universal communication, whether heard, seen or spoken, is the key to human understanding. The purpose of the Sertoma Foundation is to support the approved charitable and educational programs of our Sertoma Family through effective fundraising, investment of funds and the distribution of proceeds. Through the financial support of Sertoma's program, we become the catalyst for greater human understanding and Service to Mankind.

Why We Joined
Learn what Sertoma means to members of Fishers Sertoma. Find out why people join, become involved and remain members. Just listen to these testimonials from members of our chapter when asked this question: "What does Sertoma mean to you and why did you decide to become a member of Fishers Sertoma?"
"The best vehicle for community service I have found. One person can make a difference, as opposed to some service clubs which are nationally driven. Fishers Sertoma is a dynamic, growing community." -- Jim Rosebro, Charter President, District Governor.
"Community Service and Volunteerism are important to me and Sertoma provides a way to do those things. The club supports several worthwhile endeavors in our town and community and I am proud to be a part of a group that does so." -- Steve Sams
"I joined through work as a way to network with other community leaders and provide my time to a worthy organization that gives to other organizations that serve mankind." -- Joel O'Neil
"I joined the club because they have a vision to give back to the community, and I am new to the community but very dedicated to this community. I love the way Sertoma supports those in need." -- Mimi Westlund
"A great opportunity to meet new people, help others less fortunate than myself. Great fund raising opportunities and making great friends." -- Laurel Garfield
